A LOOK OF LOVE
Recently the media gave a lot of coverage to the visit of Pope Benedict XVI to the United States. While here, he offered some encouraging and challenging words to various audiences. I would like to share some thoughts from a document written by the Pope on the Gift of Love: “We have come to believe in God’s love; in these words, the Christian can express the fundamental decision of his/her life.” I had to ponder the idea that believing in God’s love is a decision—not a feeling, not a hope, not an act of faith, not a sentiment. It is a decision. Once I make the decision to believe in God’s love, I can act on that decision. Nothing is impossible anymore. I can do what is asked of me. Most of all, I can love others, which is the basic demand of Christian life. Pope Benedict continued, “In God and with God, I can love even the person I do not like or even know. . . . I learn to look on this other person not simply with my eyes and my feelings, but from the perspective Jesus Christ. . . . Seeing with the eyes of Christ, I can give to others much more than their outward necessities; I can give them the look of love which they crave.” What a great opportunity we have every day to offer a look of love to others. Try it!
