Monastic life at Sacred Heart Monastery
Monastic life at Sacred Heart Monastery revolves around the Liturgy
of the Hours. This community is devoted to prayer and good works.
The natural rhythm of the day begins with a brilliant sunrise and
ends with the last rays of light filtering through the prairie mists.
Every member contributes something to the greater whole, and each
member is valued for the gifts God has given her to share with
others. In this, we glorify God in all things, whether our contribution
lies in doing dishes or laundry, accounting for the monastery’s
temporal goods, writing poetry or news items, or enjoying a competitive
card or Scrabble game in the evening.
Our lives are balanced between
manual labor, prayer, recreation, and intellectual pursuits—caring
for our animals, tending the garden, singing in choir, or practicing
lectio divina. All of these activities lead us to a greater knowledge
of ourselves, each other, and God.
In the Benedictine tradition,
we treat everyone as we would treat Christ—as an honored
guest in our lives from whom all blessings flow.
Join us in the
wide open spaces of the northern plains, and get to know us
and yourself in ways you perhaps have never imagined.
