Sacred Heart Monastery is located in the rolling hills of beautiful,
rural Stark County, North Dakota, one mile west of Richardton, and
approximately eighty-five miles east of North Dakota’s border
with Montana. We are a Benedictine women’s monastery, with
twenty-eight members ranging in age from 38 to 95.
Sacred Heart Monastery
became an official monastery of the Order of St. Benedict in 1916.
The Sisters have always done whatever has been necessary to preserve
their way of life and ensure their viability in times of change
and challenge. We invite you to explore our history, flip through
our photo gallery, read about our llamas and wind turbines, and participate
in Sister Harriet’s blog to learn more about
the monastic tempo of our daily lives.
Sacred Heart Monastery is
a rural community of Catholic Benedictine women in western North
Dakota, who strive to practice, personify, and promulgate values
of prayer, hospitality, respect for persons, moderation, community,
service, and environmental stewardship in our daily lives. We
disseminate these values throughout the region by offering spiritually-based
workshops in our Spirituality Center, hosting group and individual
retreats and programs, fostering religious vocations to the monastic
life, and working and living in various communities in the region. The
purpose of Sacred Heart Monastery is to provide a contemporary
template for Gospel-driven living by modeling a communal, apostolic,
Christian way of life.
